This is dedicated to all special kids and parents who love them. Our stories and experiences may differ, but one thing binds us together, the love for our special people.
Do you know any special kids? Or perhaps you have been blessed with one or more. You are doing a great and important work caring for a special kid. And if you are an ally, never fail to support with a positive word and a kind smile. They go a long way!
Special Kids!
Jesus was not your average kid. He was special. A special kid in his own way. (How do you explain growing up with the knowledge that you were meant to save the world and that the redemption of mankind was up to you?)
When he was twelve years old, his parents took Him to Jerusalem to celebrate the feast of the Passover as was their custom. Instead of staying close to His parents, Jesus took off and went to the temple to talk and reason with teachers of the law. He took off to pursue His passion – maybe video games for a kid today.
He totally lost track of time and got His parents worried, they did not find him for three days!
Reasoning with Him
Most parents today would throw a fit, seize his allowance, punish him with a time-out, ground him, or perhaps even reprimand him using angry words. Or a combination of all of the above, lol.
His parents likely started on this path but when they heard His unusual response, they were likely taken aback and had to calm themselves. Why? Because they remembered He was a special child. Another child may still have been punished anyway or they may not have given such a response to their parent’s inquiry.
But when Mary heard it, she remembered the circumstances surrounding His birth. How an Angel had appeared to her, how she came to be pregnant, the gifts she received when He was born, the wise men and the star, and their messages regarding her son.
Coming to terms with it
She remembered it all and therefore stayed calm. Why? Because this was no ordinary child. So perhaps His unusual behavior was part of the package and therefore did not warrant a meltdown from her. Perhaps it even called for a celebration, because it meant the things the Angel told her about Him were true and were coming to pass.
There were probably a lot of other things that Jesus did that were unusual for a child His age, but His parents would always remember that He was a special child and likely consoled themselves with that fact.
He was special, He was different, He was blessed, He was the Son of God.
A Word for you!
Little ones, you are special! You may not be like other kids, but God has a special plan for your life. You certainly did not ask to be born this way, but you are no mistake! God did not change His mind about you at the last minute. He had a plan when you were born and He has not changed His mind now.
You are a ‘bank’ and ‘well’ of potential and blessings!
And for loving parents too
And while Jesus’ parents may not have understood Him completely, they sure knew they were blessed to have been the ones chosen to bear such a special kid. God has chosen us for the awesome assignment of nurturing these special ones.
We are blessed to have you in our lives. You are God’s gift to us and to humanity.
The world is blessed and richer because you are in it, and you will find and realize your great potential to be a blessing as soon as you realize that your difference is special.
